How to Practise Sarali Varisai
Sarali varisai are the first exercises most Carnatic students learn: simple straight-line patterns up and down the scale. They look easy and are worth taking seriously — this is where you build the pitch accuracy everything later depends on.
- Set a steady shruti. Start the online tanpura and settle on a comfortable Sa before you sing a single swara — see the guide on finding your shruti if you need it.
- Sing slowly, one swara at a time. Go through Sa Ri Ga Ma Pa Da Ni Sa and back down, holding each swara long enough to actually check it against the drone rather than sliding through it.
- Watch for the swaras that drift. Some swaras will consistently sit a little sharp or flat against the drone — that's normal at first. Note which ones so you can slow down on them specifically.
- Increase speed only once pitch is solid. Only speed up once you can sing the pattern accurately at a slow tempo. Speed hides pitch problems; it doesn't fix them.
