How to Start Singing in a Raga
Moving from exercises to an actual raga is where Carnatic music starts to feel like music. A raga is more than its scale, but starting from the scale, sung correctly, is still the right first step.
- Learn the arohana and avarohana. Look up the raga's ascending and descending scale on its raga page and sing them slowly, both ways, against a drone tuned to your Sa.
- Notice where it differs from a plain scale. Check whether any swara changes between the arohana and avarohana, or is skipped entirely — many ragas use a different note going up than coming down.
- Listen for where gamakas belong. Where a raga page notes a gamaka (an oscillation) on a swara, that swara usually isn't meant to be sung flat and still — try bending or shaking it gently the way the note describes.
- Practise with real-time feedback. Sing short phrases in the raga against the tanpura and use the practice tool to see how closely your pitch is tracking the raga as you go.
