Gamanashrama
Also known as: Gamanasrama, Gamana Shrama, Gamakakriya
Melakarta raga — 53
Practise Gamanashrama →Gamanashrama is a serene, contemplative sampurna melakarta whose Hindustani counterpart is the sunset raga Marva, lending it a grave, meditative color. Being a comparatively modern scale with no Trinity kritis, it is heard less often on its own and is overshadowed by its very popular janya Hamsanandi and by the closely related Poorvikalyani; its identity rests on the distinctive P-D-N-S / P-D-P-S phrase. It is best known through Muthuswami Dikshitar's Gamakakriya compositions (e.g. Meenakshi Me Mudam, Kasi Visalakshim) and later pallavi and kriti elaborations by post-Trinity musicians such as Mysore Vasudevachar, Koteeswara Iyer, M.L. Vasanthakumari and Balamuralikrishna.
Gamaka
| Swara | Style | Hold allowed | Oscillation | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | steady | yes | — | Shadja is the unornamented tonal anchor and chief graha/nyasa note, sounded plain against the drone and used as the arrival point of the signature P-D-N-S phrase. |
| r | kampita | no | — | The shuddha rishabham is a life-note usually reached by a descending glide from G3 (G-r) and given a gentle kampita oscillation rather than a flat hold; holding it plain pulls the raga toward its higher-rishabham Kalyani-family relatives. |
| G | steady | yes | — | Antara gandharam is rendered relatively plain and commonly serves as the launch point both for the descent to rishabham (G-r) and the ascent through prati madhyamam. |
| M | kampita | yes | — | The prati madhyamam is a prominent jeeva and nyasa swara carried with a kampita oscillation and frequently used as a resting note in slow (vilamba) passages. |
| P | steady | yes | — | Panchamam is a stable resting note and the head of the identifying P-D-N-S / P-D-P-S phrase that most clearly announces the raga; it is sounded largely plain. |
| D | kampita | yes | — | Chatushruti dhaivatham operates within the identifying P-D-N-S / P-D-P-S movement, generally given a light oscillation as it links panchamam to nishadham. |
| N | nokku | no | — | Kakali nishadham is typically stressed from above with a nokku/oscillation and led into the upper shadja; held flat it dulls the raga's characteristic upper-tetrachord color. |
Common pitfalls
- Slipping into Poorvikalyani-style phrasing and resolutions so completely that the raga's own identity is lost until the characteristic P-D-N-S / P-D-P-S phrase is sounded.
- Dropping or weakening the panchamam, which collapses the raga into its janya Hamsanandi (which omits P).
- Rendering the shuddha rishabham (r) as a plain flat-held or higher rishabham instead of an oscillated life-note approached from G3, pulling the raga toward the Kalyani family.
