Shubhapantuvarali
Also known as: Subhapantuvarali, Shubha Panthuvarali, Subha Pantuvarali, Shivapantuvarali, Pantuvarali (historical/ambiguous usage for mela 45)
Melakarta raga — 45
Practise Shubhapantuvarali →Shubhapantuvarali is a deeply pathos-laden minor-scale melakarta (prati madhyama with kakali nishada) that is a quintessential vehicle for karuna rasa — sorrow, longing, and intense devotional supplication. Its shuddha rishabha (r), sadharana gandhara (g), prati madhyama (M) and shuddha dhaivata (d) give it a grave, introspective color, and it is a sarva-swara-gamaka-varika rakti raga in which nearly every note is inflected. Usually associated with evening/night, it carries weighty compositions such as Muthuswami Dikshitar's "Shri Satyanarayanam Upasmahe."
Gamaka
| Swara | Style | Hold allowed | Oscillation | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | steady | yes | — | Tonic drone anchor and principal graha/nyasa; held plain and stable as the resting point of phrases. |
| r | kampita | no | — | Shuddha rishabha (R1) is a jeeva swara rendered with an oscillated kampita rather than a flat hold, contributing much of the raga's plaintive ache. |
| g | kampita | no | — | Sadharana gandhara (G2) is a jeeva swara, usually approached from M with a slide and given a gentle kampita, never sung as a bare flat note. |
| M | kampita | no | — | Prati madhyama (M2) is the raga's most defining, poignant swara, heavily oscillated and dwelt upon; may settle only briefly as a resting note but is characteristically inflected. |
| P | steady | yes | — | Panchama is a stable resting/nyasa swara held plain, providing contrast to the surrounding oscillated notes. |
| d | kampita | no | — | Shuddha dhaivata (D1) is rendered with a plaintive kampita and often serves as a nyasa in descending phrases, deepening the karuna bhava. |
| N | jaru | no | — | Kakali nishada (N3) is the leading tone taken up to S with a jaru/nokku glide (N3-S), sharpening the resolution rather than being held flat. |
Common pitfalls
- Singing r, g, d or M as plain flat notes instead of gamaka-inflected ones, which strips the raga of its karuna bhava.
- Confusing it with Todi/Hanumatodi (mela 8): Shubhapantuvarali uses prati madhyama (M2) and kakali nishada (N3), not shuddha madhyama and kaisiki nishada.
- Confusing it with Kamavardhini/'Panthuvarali' (mela 51): both share prati madhyama, but mela 51 has antara gandhara (G3) and chatushruti dhaivata, whereas Shubhapantuvarali has sadharana gandhara (g/G2) and shuddha dhaivata (d/D1).
