Abhogi
Also known as: Abhogi Kanada, Abhōgi, Abogi
Janya raga of melakarta 22 — audava-audava
Practise Abhogi →Abhogi is a serene, symmetric audava-audava janya of Kharaharapriya (22nd mela) prized as a rakti raga associated with bhakti (devotion) and shanta (peace), though its fast-moving swara combinations also lend themselves to brisk, energetic passages in varnams and kritis; the absence of panchama and nishada gives it a light, uncluttered, contemplative feel.
Gamaka
| Swara | Style | Hold allowed | Oscillation | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | jaru | yes | — | Tonic and nyasa point, but its defining gamaka is the careful glide to/from D2 that must skip over nishadam entirely or the raga slides into Sriranjani. |
| R | kampita | yes | -45 to 45 cents | A nyasa swara carrying gentle oscillation, frequently the opening note of phrases such as S R g. |
| g | kampita | yes | -45 to 45 cents | The principal jeeva (life) swara of Abhogi, given a light kampita oscillation that supplies most of the raga's emotional colour. |
| m | nokku | yes | — | Functions as a brief touch/sphurita-type note as much as a sustained tone, pivoting between Ga and Dha in phrases like g m D. |
| D | steady | yes | — | The chhaya (shadow) swara — prominent and usually held comparatively plain/steady even while R2 and G2 oscillate, and central to the raga's signature D2-S cadence. |
Common pitfalls
- Letting the nishadam surface while gliding from D2 back to S (or S to D2) — this is the single most-cited beginner error and turns Abhogi into its closely allied raga Sriranjani.
- Treating every swara with the same gamaka weight instead of concentrating oscillation on R2/G2 while keeping D2 comparatively steadier/held — flattens the raga's characteristic rakti bhava.
- Borrowing the zigzag (vakra) Kanada-style descent G-M-R-S wholesale from Hindustani Abhogi Kanada practice without the Carnatic straightening of that phrase.
- Confusing Abhogi with its graha-bhedam relatives Valaji/Kalavati, or with Sriranjani/Jayamanohari, due to the overlapping pentatonic shapes.
- Using panchamam at all, or resting too long on it by habit from other Kharaharapriya janyas — panchama does not exist in this scale.

- https://autrimncpa.wordpress.com/abhogi-2/ — Hindustani-tradition source (Abhogi Kanada); used only for cross-checking gamaka texture (oscillation on flat Ga, held Ma/Dha) — its claim that Dha is often oscillated conflicts with the Carnatic sources' 'Dha held plain' description, so the Carnatic view (D2 steady) was preferred for this Carnatic raga record.
Parent scale
Abhogi is a janya (derived) raga of the melakarta Kharaharapriya (melakarta 22) — it draws its swarasthanas from that parent scale.
