Brindavana Saranga
Also known as: Brindavani Sarang, Vrindavana Saranga, Brindavani, Brindavana Sarangi, Vrindavani Sarang, Brindavana Sarangam
Janya raga of melakarta 22 — audava-audava
Practise Brindavana Saranga →Brindavana Saranga is a bhashanga janya of the 22nd melakarta Kharaharapriya, adopted into Carnatic music from the Hindustani raga Brindavani Sarang (Kafi thaat), where it is traditionally performed around noon/early afternoon and carries a shringara- and veera-tinged mood; Carnatic renditions are not time-restricted. Its best-known Carnatic compositions are Tyagaraja's 'Kamalaptakula' and Muthuswami Dikshitar's 'Rangapura Vihara' and 'Sri Soundararajam', and pathantara (lineage) differences mean some Dikshitar-school renditions add a fleeting bhashanga sadharana gandhara (G2) touch that other schools omit entirely.
Gamaka
| Swara | Style | Hold allowed | Oscillation | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | steady | yes | — | Shadja is held plain as the stable graha/nyasa anchor at both the lower and upper octave in this raga's phrases. |
| R | kampita | yes | — | R2 is a jeeva swara given a light, gentle oscillation and also serves as a nyasa point, especially in S R m ascending motifs. |
| m | steady | yes | — | M1 is usually rendered plain/held as a resting jeeva-nyasa tone in phrases like S R m P, with only occasional light andolana. |
| P | steady | yes | — | Panchama is a firm nyasa/graha point and the springboard from which the raga's signature P-N3-Sa ascent is launched. |
| n | jaru | no | — | Kaisiki nishada (N2) occurs only in avarohana, slid into from Sa/P and passed through quickly rather than held, e.g. Sa n P. |
| N | kampita | yes | — | Kakali nishada (N3) occurs only in arohana and is the raga's defining anya swara (foreign to parent Kharaharapriya's native N2), given a gentle oscillation as it leads into the upper Sa. |
Common pitfalls
- Swapping the two nishadas — using kakali N3 while descending or kaisiki N2 while ascending; N (N3) belongs strictly to arohana and n (N2) strictly to avarohana.
- Treating gandhara or dhaivata as steady core tones; the skeletal scale is S R m P n N only, though a handful of Dikshitar-lineage renditions (e.g. 'Rangapura Vihara') use a very brief, heavily gamaka-laden bhashanga G2 as an ornament — this should not be generalized into every performance.
- Flattening the raga into generic Kharaharapriya or drifting toward Madhyamavati phraseology by underplaying the characteristic P-N(3)-Sa ascent and Sa-n(2)-P descent that give Brindavana Saranga its identity.
