Dharmavati is the 59th melakarta (prati-madhyama counterpart of the 23rd melakarta Gourimanohari), a sampurna raga whose raised madhyamam and oscillated sadharana gandharam give it a bright yet tender, devotional-lyrical mood. It is treated as an evening raga and, through its very popular janya Madhuvanti, carries strong associations of gentle love/sringara, while the full melakarta scale itself reads as more expansive and majestic. Notable compositions include Muthuswami Dikshitar's "Parandhamavati Jayathi" (in the Dikshitar-school name Dhaamavati) and it has been widely used in Tamil and Hindi film music.

Gamaka

SwaraStyleHold allowedOscillationNotes
S steady yes The shadja is the fixed drone-anchored tonic and is held plain as the primary graha/nyasa point of rest.
R kampita yes The chatusruti rishabham is a relatively stable note usually taken plain or with a light kampita, often approached with a small slide from S or G.
g kampita no The sadharana gandharam is the characteristic life-note of the raga and is rendered with an expressive oscillation (often shaken from R/M) rather than held flat, giving Dharmavati its bhava.
M kampita yes The prati madhyamam is a prominent, emphasized note that carries the raised-fourth colour; it is often oscillated or used as a nyasa/resting point and is rendered with a firm kampita.
P steady yes The panchama is a stable pillar note, held plain and used as a graha/nyasa point around which phrases pivot.
D nokku yes The chatusruti dhaivatam is generally plain but frequently takes a nokku/light touch from N in descent (N D P) rather than a heavy shake.
N jaru no The kakali nishadham functions as a leading tone that is typically slid (jaru) up toward the upper shadja in ascent and rarely sustained flat.
