Hemavati
Also known as: Simharavam, Deshi Simharavam, Deshisimharavam, Desisimharavam
Melakarta raga — 58
Practise Hemavati →Hemavati is the 58th melakarta, a sampoorna raga that is the prati-madhyama (raised fourth) counterpart of Kharaharapriya, sharing the same chatushruti rishabham, sadharana gandharam, chatushruti dhaivatam and kaisiki nishadam. Like its family, it is a fluid, flexible raga suited to elaborate alapana and it carries a devotional, gently plaintive mood; it is especially favored by nadaswaram artists and has been drawn into Hindustani and film music. It has an established classical repertoire, including compositions by Muthuswami Dikshitar (who treats it as Deshi Simharavam in the asampurna mela tradition).
Gamaka
| Swara | Style | Hold allowed | Oscillation | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | steady | yes | — | Shadjam is the fixed tonic, held plain as the principal graha and nyasa note with no oscillation. |
| R | kampita | yes | — | Chatushruti rishabham is typically given a gentle kampita in this Kharaharapriya-family scale, though it can rest as a landing/nyasa note when phrases pause on it. |
| g | kampita | no | — | Sadharana gandharam is the characteristic jeeva swara and is almost always oscillated (kampita), often swung up from R, rather than held flat. |
| M | kampita | yes | — | Prati madhyamam is the defining note that distinguishes Hemavati from its shuddha-madhyama counterpart Kharaharapriya; it is prominent, frequently ornamented with kampita or approached by a slide (jaru), but can also serve as a resting note. |
| P | steady | yes | — | Panchamam is a fixed, stable note held plain and used as a nyasa/resting point. |
| D | kampita | yes | — | Chatushruti dhaivatam is rendered with a moderate gamaka in descent from N; it can also act as a landing note in phrases. |
| n | kampita | no | — | Kaisiki nishadam is oscillated and commonly approached with a slide from the upper Shadjam, giving it a plaintive shade rather than being sung as a flat note. |
Common pitfalls
- Playing shuddha madhyamam (M1) instead of prati madhyamam (M2), which collapses the raga into Kharaharapriya (mela 22).
- Singing the sadharana gandharam (g) as a flat, held note instead of giving it its characteristic oscillation, which makes the raga sound scalar and mechanical.
- Rendering R and n as plain notes without the appropriate kampita/slide, losing the raga's expressive, gamaka-laden identity.
