Harikambhoji
Also known as: Harikambodhi, Hari Kambhoji, Harikedaragowla (Muthuswami Dikshitar school name for the same scale), Bana-Bhu (traditional mela mnemonic name)
Melakarta raga — 28
Practise Harikambhoji →Harikambhoji carries a pleasant, devotional bhava that is lighter and less grave than its own famous derivative Kambhoji or the melakarta Sankarabharanam, which is why it is more often used as a substantial supporting raga in concerts than as an elaborate centerpiece. Compositions by Thyagaraja and others in this raga nonetheless bring out genuine emotional and devotional depth when the raga's own identity (not Kambhoji's majestic gamaka style) is foregrounded.
Gamaka
| Swara | Style | Hold allowed | Oscillation | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | steady | yes | — | Shadja is the graha (starting) note and invariant tonic, held plain as the raga's anchor. |
| R | kampita | no | -45 to 45 cents | Chatusruti Rishabha is a principal jeeva swara shared in identity with Kambhoji and carries characteristic oscillating gamaka prayogas essential to the raga. |
| G | steady | yes | — | Antara Gandhara is a nyasa (resting) note rendered plain rather than with Kambhoji's heavy gandhara gamakam, a key way performers keep the two ragas distinct. |
| m | kampita | yes | -30 to 30 cents | Shuddha Madhyama occurs in the emphasized 'r g m' phrase and takes only gentle, restrained oscillation, kept lighter than the heavy 'g m' kampita typical of the closely allied raga Khamas. |
| P | steady | yes | — | Panchama is a stable, lightly ornamented anchor note, as is typical across melakarta ragas. |
| D | steady | yes | — | Chatusruti Dhaivata is both a nyasa note and one of the raga's important jeeva swaras, generally held with minimal ornamentation to distinguish it from Kambhoji's more decorated dhaivata. |
| n | kampita | no | -45 to 45 cents | Kaishiki Nishada is a jeeva swara that takes oscillating gamaka prayogas, prominent in the characteristic 'd n s' descent back to the tonic. |
Common pitfalls
- Treating Harikambhoji like Kambhoji by adding heavy gandhara/nishada gamakam and lingering in the upper-octave gandhara region, which blurs the identity of the two ragas.
- Overusing oscillation on the madhyama-nishada-dhaivata movement ('m n d') or introducing kakali nishada, both of which pull the rendering toward the janya raga Khamas instead of Harikambhoji.
- De-emphasizing or omitting rishabha in ascending phrases (acceptable in the janya Khamas, which lacks Ri in arohana) rather than using it as Harikambhoji's core arohana note.
- Applying gamaka too loosely on jeeva swaras like rishabha and dhaivata — even a slight extra oscillation can shift the raga's swaroopam (identity), per experienced performers on rasikas.org.
