Arabhi
Also known as: Aarabhi, Arabhi Ragam, Pazhanthakkam (claimed ancient Tamil-music name, unverified)
Janya raga of melakarta 29 — sampoorna-sampoorna
Practise Arabhi →Arabhi is one of the five ancient Ghana ragas and the third of the Ghana Pancharatna ragas, expressing primarily Veera (heroic/valorous) rasa with touches of Bhakti and occasional Roudra (fury), giving it an auspicious, "mangalakaramaana" religious-fervour quality. Rather than leaning on heavy gamakas, its energetic character is built through brisk tempo and creative brigas (fast swara passages), with only Rishabha and (lightly) Gandhara taking any oscillation.
Gamaka
| Swara | Style | Hold allowed | Oscillation | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | steady | yes | — | Shadjam is the tonic and a graha/nyasa anchor, sung plain and held, e.g. as the base for the S N D descent. |
| R | kampita | yes | -35 to 35 cents | Rishabham is a jeeva and nyasa swara carrying a light, quick oscillation and appearing in janta prayogas such as 'R R' within the signature phrase 'M G R R'. |
| G | jaru | no | -60 to 0 cents | Gandharam is an alpa (weak) swara occurring only in avarohana, always glided through quickly in support of Madhyama (as in 'M G R') and never held, paused on, or doubled — doing so evokes raga Sama instead. |
| m | steady | yes | — | Shuddha Madhyama (M1) is a steady jeeva swara that anchors and supports the fleeting Gandharam in phrases such as 'M G R'. |
| P | steady | yes | — | Panchamam is the raga's principal nyasa swara and melodic center of gravity, around which phrases repeatedly resolve and can be held long. |
| D | steady | yes | — | Shuddha Dhaivata (D2) is a jeeva swara sung comparatively plainly, prominent in descending phrases like 'P D N D P'. |
| N | nokku | no | -20 to -5 cents | Kakali Nishada (N3) is a weak swara that leans on and stays close to Shadjam, given only a light touch in the descent 'S N D', almost merging into 'S S D'. |
Common pitfalls
- Over-emphasizing, pausing on, or applying janta (doubled-note) treatment to Gandharam — it must stay fleeting and subordinate to Madhyama, never held or given importance.
- Landing/resting on Gandharam instead of on Rishabha or Panchama, which shifts the melody's identity toward the closely related raga Sama.
- Confusing Arabhi with its 'sister' raga Devagandhari by over-ornamenting Rishabha or slowing the tempo — Devagandhari is gamaka-laden and slow, while Arabhi is brisk, briga-driven, and comparatively plain-noted.
- Introducing kaisiki nishada (N2) or otherwise giving Nishadam prominence — Arabhi uses only N3, kept minimal and always leaning on Shadjam.
- Applying heavy, sustained oscillation throughout the raga when its character calls for relatively flat/steady notes punctuated by fast brigas.

Parent scale
Arabhi is a janya (derived) raga of the melakarta Dheerasankarabharanam (melakarta 29) — it draws its swarasthanas from that parent scale.
