Bilahari
Also known as: Bilahari ragam, Bilahari raagam
Janya raga of melakarta 29 — sampoorna-sampoorna
Practise Bilahari →Bilahari is a rakti raga that "pleases instantly," radiating veera rasa (heroism/courage) along with joy, romance and devotion; it is a favorite morning raga (roughly 6-10 AM) prized by nadaswaram vidwans for lifting mood and energy, especially when sung briskly.
Gamaka
| Swara | Style | Hold allowed | Oscillation | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | steady | yes | — | Shadjam is the plain, un-oscillated anchor (graha/nyasa) at the start and close of both arohana and avarohana. |
| R | kampita | yes | -40 to 40 cents | Chatushruti rishabham is a ragachaya (jeeva) swara and the raga's vadi, often given a gentle oscillation but delivered with firm emphasis, especially when resolving a descending madhyama-rishabha phrase. |
| G | kampita | yes | -45 to 45 cents | Antara gandharam carries a bright, slightly faster oscillation that gives the raga's ascending phrases (R-G-P) their characteristic lift and a touch of yearning. |
| P | steady | yes | — | Panchamam is usually taken plain and held as a structural nyasa point bridging the ascending and descending halves of the raga. |
| D | kampita | yes | -40 to 40 cents | Chatushruti dhaivatam is a ragachaya (jeeva) swara and rishabha's samvadi, frequently doubled (janta DD) and oscillated for emphasis at melodic peaks. |
| m | nokku | no | — | Shuddha madhyamam appears only in descent (never in arohana) and is touched softly and briefly rather than held, forming a delicate bridge between panchamam and gandharam before resolving forcefully onto rishabham. |
| N | kampita | yes | -35 to 35 cents | Kakali nishadam is the swara that completes the descending scale and is a ragachaya swara giving emotional resolution; it is normally reached by a glide rather than a direct leap from shadjam, and should not be confused with the kaishiki nishadam (N2) that occasionally enters as Bilahari's bhashanga anya swara. |
Common pitfalls
- Collapsing the descent into the same pentatonic shape as the ascent (omitting madhyamam and/or nishadam while descending), which accidentally turns Bilahari into raga Mohanam.
- Introducing madhyamam or nishadam into the ascending phrase (arohana), which must stay strictly pentatonic S R G P D S; these two swaras belong only to the avarohana.
- Using the kaishiki nishadam (N2, the raga's anya/bhashanga note) as a general substitute for kakali nishadam (N3) instead of reserving it for the specific phrases where it traditionally occurs.
- Rendering shuddha madhyamam with too much weight or a held gamaka, when tradition calls for a soft, brief touch that sets up a forceful resolution onto rishabham.
- Leaping directly from shadjam to nishadam instead of approaching nishadam by glide, which flattens the raga's characteristic contour.
- Conflating Carnatic Bilahari with the Hindustani raga Bilaval/Alhaiya Bilaval on the assumption they are identical, when only the swara set overlaps and the gamaka vocabulary differs substantially.
