Sarasangi is the 27th melakarta (3rd raga of the Bana chakra, mnemonic Bana-Go) and corresponds to the Western harmonic major scale; in Muthuswami Dikshitar's asampurna school the 27th mela is named Sowrasena/Sourasena. Its mood is pleasing yet gently melancholic, well suited to bhakti (devotion) and karuna (pathos), a poignant color that flows directly from the shuddha dhaivatam (d) and the striking d–N (augmented-second) interval that set it apart from its plain-major cousin Shankarabharanam. No fixed time of day is traditionally prescribed (as with melakartas generally); it appears less often as a full concert raga than the major melakartas but carries substantial kritis such as Tyagaraja's "Menu Joochi (Mosa Bokave)", Dikshitar's "Sourasenesham/Sadasivam" and Swati Tirunal's "Jaya Jaya Padmanabha".

Gamaka

SwaraStyleHold allowedOscillationNotes
S steady yes Shadjam is sung plain as the tonic anchor; the principal graha and nyasa of the raga.
R kampita yes Chatushruti rishabham is taken with a gentle kampita within phrases but can also rest as a fairly plain note in this near-major scale.
G steady yes Antara gandharam is a strong, largely steady note, often approached by a slide from R and used as a phrase-landing (resting) point.
m steady yes Shuddha madhyamam is rendered largely plain as a connecting note, with only light inflection in descent.
P steady yes Panchamam is a stable secondary anchor sung plain and used as a common nyasa.
d kampita no Shuddha dhaivatam is the distinctive jeeva swara, approached with a slide from N and inflected with gamaka to voice the raga's plaintive bhava, so it is generally not left flat.
N kampita yes Kakali nishadam is a strong leading note to the upper shadjam, often given a slight oscillation and forming the signature d–N interval.
